Huge interest in the RICOH THETA in San Francisco. I got home at midnight!

That was a lot of fun! Speakers were really great, nice combination of overview of the industry and who’s making money now (Architecture, Building, Construction, Real Estate) and who will be making money (WebVR), then specifics of one company’s decision to focus on 360 for construction which necessitated a focus on speed, ease of use and static images. And finally, a taste for what’s possible with drones, including how to attach, weight issues, and especially stabilization. Great evening, thanks to everyone who participated.

Eddie Codel speaks at the RICOH THETA Meetup in San Francisco about aerial imagery and drones. Although nascent, 360 video on drones is about to explode. It’s a time of rapid innovation. Eddie is director of the Flying Robot International Film Festival and a local expert on drone videography. During the meeting, he flew a drone with a THETA recording 360 video.

Wow… bummed to miss this, I live in SF and have done some fun work with the Theta.

Would love to know any other meet ups in the area.

@jcasman is organizing another one right now. What type of content would you like to see? We’re thinking about covering some Unity augmented reality examples.

I would just love to see what others are doing with the Theta.

I worked with Ricoh with the launch films for the Theta and have done some fun projects with it.

Excited to meet others using it,

Phil

Thanks for the feedback Phil. There’s a ton of exciting and some really cool ways to tell stories or create experiences. Every time we have a meetup, I’m amazed at what people are doing. Object recognition, object measurement, vehicle navigation, overlay of video onto a 360 image background, augmented reality. Look forward to seeing you at the next meetup.

@Phil_Spitler,

Thanks for the note, please keep your eyes peeled here for announcements around the next meetup. With Thanksgiving coming up very soon, it may end up being in December. We’ll do the announcement here.

You can also sign up directly here: http://www.meetup.com/RICOH-THETA-Developers-SF-Bay-Area/

Here’s one recent very cool project, doing time-lapse photography with a RICOH THETA in a forest by a Research Associate at Harvard University named Koen Hufkens.

If you’re more on the filmography / artistic side, I personally am going to see the second annual Flying Robot international Film Festival awards night coming up in two weeks, November 17, 2016, at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco. Tickets were pretty cheap, $15. No idea if any of the winners will be using RICOH THETAs, but drones plus 360 degree photography is pretty interesting. And this film festival focuses on storytelling. Should be good.

Hope to see you online here and maybe at the next meetup!

Drone filming and image shooting are now from this year forbidden in Sweden :disappointed_relieved:

Oh wow, really? Were there bad incidents that caused this? Or is it about privacy concerns? Hopefully they don’t outlaw fishing poles and picture taking!

Just a quick followup. I had a great time attending. Final winners announced here.

It was really inspiring, specific to drones and both to filmmaking. I would really love to try and do some film work. If I had the time!
